What You’ll Need
Before we begin, gather the following materials:
- Pipe cleaners in various colours
- Scissors
- Green Tape (optional)
- Paints or eyeshadow palette (optional)
- Floral wire (optional for added stability)
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Choose Your Colour Palette
Select a range of colourful pipe cleaners that will form the petals of your flower. Feel free to mix and match to create a unique and vibrant look. You can make various types of flowers daisies, tulips, sunflower etcs by combining different shades of pipe cleaners.
Step 2: Creating Petals
To form the petals, select two green pipe cleaners then
- twist the ends together to make one long pipe cleaner.
- Next, wrap the pipe cleaner around a solid base, like a piece of folded card, lighter, pen, or handle of a tool like a screwdriver.
- Once the hoops are made, push the pipe cleaner off the solid base. You’ll be left with a series of hoops and two straight ends, one shorter than the other.
- Twist the straight ends together, twice, then push the long end in through the hoops to secure them and out the other side and then twist that end with the shorter end.
- Then pull the hoops apart to form a circle, so it looks like a star shape.

Step 3: Assembling the Flower
Now, to make it more flower like, we need to flatten the hoops.
- Take each hoop and twist & turn it so it lays flat and press together into oval shapes with no gaps with your fingers, do that for each hoop.
- Continue until all hoops are now flat.
Step 4: Adding the Centre
For the middle of your flower, select another coloured pipe cleaner of your choice, yellows, browns or orange tend to work best (but it depends on your flower!). Then choose the stem colour, a green pipe cleaner.
- Simply fold the top of the green pipe cleaner, place your other piper cleaner horizontally inside the folder and then wrap that pipe cleaner around it to make a small cirlce.
- Squoosh and shape into a little ball.
You can play around with shaping the petals now, by bending them so they look like natural flowers.

Step 5: Making Leaves
To add a touch of greenery, you can add leaves made from green pipe cleaners.
- Make a large loop with the pipe cleaner and twist the end.
- Then squeeze the hoop together to make a longer oval leaf shape, and shape it by bending the top backwards. You’ll need at least two leaves.
- Now attach to the stem of your flower by twisting the end of the pipe cleaner onto the stem of the flower. Continue to attach the remaining leaves.
You can also use green tape to secure the flower.

Step 6: Final Touches
Your pipe cleaner flower is almost complete! You can experiment with different shapes and sizes; elongated petals or a broader bloom can add variety. You can play around with the shapes by moulding the petals or the leaves and you can add depth to the flower center using paint or eye shadow to create colour variation and depth.

Step 7: Displaying Your Masterpiece
Once your flower is complete, find the perfect spot to display your creation! Arrange your flowers in a vase, use them as table centrepieces, or create a stunning wall decor piece.
Tips for Success
- Experiment with different types and colours of pipe cleaners for varied effects.
- Try making flowers in various sizes for a more dynamic display.
